There are 21 military bases in Florida (FL). All military branches have at least one military base in Florida. This includes Air Forces, Army, Coast Guard, Navy, and Marine Corps. Most bases are located near a coast line and works as very important US military forces.

  • Tyndall Air Force Base

    The Tyndall Air Force Base is situated on an agreeable land formation of over 28,800 acres in size.     However as time progressed, training exercises entertained all-weather aircraft controllers and jet interceptor pilots development training. In 1957, the development was reorganized by the Air Defense Command with assigned duties, to focus on system evaluations and weapons training techniques, equipment testing, tactical air defense and tactics for the military. The 325th Fighter Weapons Wing was given the name 325th Tactical Training Wing in 1981 under strategical commands. The base was then assigned as an Air Combat Command division, in September of 1991.

    This established has the 53rd Weapons Evaluation Group and 325th Wing which is the 1st Air Force headquarters contained for housing on property. The name assigned to the establishment was derived from the pilot of World War I who was the first Lieutenant, recognized as Frank Benjamin Tyndall. This legendary commander is well known for his command of the 22nd Aero Squadron that successfully destroyed four enemy planes in France and is a Silver Star recipient.

  • Naval Support Activity Panama City

    On July 20, 1945, The Naval Support Activity Panama City was established as the United States Mine Countermeasures station. The organization is a well reputable military facility that hosts a total of 135 officers that are active on duty, 11, 000 retirees, 644 active duties enlisted, 1, 972 family members, 1, 333 civilian’s employees, 36 reserve component offers and 24 reserve component officers. The facility is nestled in Panama City Beach, Florida in the St. Andrew division. This facility is resourceful in providing the educational skills and theoretical specifications for water-fighters to have direct access to the Gulf of Mexico.

The facility was later renamed in the United States Navy Mine Defense Laboratory in 1955, as the facility transitioned to improve the services provisioned new names are being assigned. The facility received the name Naval Coastal Systems Laboratory in 1972, categorized with a variety of command divisions such as, the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren and the Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock.

  • Naval Air Warfare Center

    The key function of the Naval Air Warfare Center is to effectively train, enforce and regulate human performance solutions to educate the Nation’s War fighters. The name, Naval Training Systems Center was given to the facility in 1985 from its previous recognition Naval Training Equipment Center, after its relocation in 1988 and received the name Naval Air Warfare Center which is its current name, was issued on October1, 1993.

There are only a few Air Warfare Centers that are privileged to offer technical support for the United States Navy airborne and aircraft weapon systems. This facility is the smallest of all Navy bases in the world and is nestled on an estimated 40 acres of land, although the division is miniature in size, it plays a major role in military training and systems development.   • Patrick Air Force Base

    The United States military commands have assigned the Patrick Air Force Base as the space launch headquarters for test operations.     The Patrick Air Force Base is one of the most prominent facilities of the Eastern Missile Range in the military that is developed ideally to oversee circuitous launch sites and tracking stations within the United States and approximately 10, 000 miles of the Indian Ocean. There are five tracking stations available in the Eastern Range.     The facility is also equipped with a Space Coast Inn, which entertains visiting guests, permanent residency for enlisted operatives, and family members are offered separate housing facilities, beach access, beach homes, commissary, clubs, library, welfare and recreational facilities, etc. Although these establishments are owned and operated by the United States Air Force and Military Services, immediate directions are initiated by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of the United States Military.

    The facility became a privatized housing for lease in 2009 accommodating military retirees, civil service employees for the Department of Defense, DOD contractors, Reserves and Guards.

    A medical clinic was constructed in 2010, which is nestled on a 74, 000 square feet plot and attracts an estimated cost of 18 million dollars. The operatives trained, are effective in executing the necessities of the job specifics assigned.

  • Naval Air Station Pensacola

    The Naval Air Station Pensacola was assigned as the primary headquarters for the Chief of Naval Education and Training development in 1971.     The institution is also well known for its commanding operations of the merger between the Officer Candidate School and the Aviation Officer Candidate School in 2007. The establishment also handles complex operations executed by over 7, 400 civilian operatives and 16, 000 military employees in the Santa Rosa and Escambia counties. Due to the high impact of damages experienced by Hurricane Ivan in 2004, the base was realigned temporarily in 2005 for reconstruction. Currently the facility is rehabilitated and is controlled by Captain S.W. Holmes.

  • Naval Air Station Whiting Field

    The Naval Air Station coexists as one of the two primary pilot training facilities in the United States Navy. Travel to the facility is simple since it is only 30 miles in distance from the Pensacola Regional Airport. The Naval Air Station is nestled on approximately 3,842 acres of land, consisting of two separate air fields, prominently located in Milton, Florida. The installation is known to be the busiest of all Navy facilities worldwide. The area is well cropped in its provision for forestry and agricultural lands southwest, northwest and south of the boundaries. A total of 6 500 residents located within a four mile radius of the facility, can access drinking water from the surface.

    This establishment has secured a spot since July 1943 with the primary objective of educating and training future operatives for the Navy’s aviation team, in repairing wing aviation and complex helicopter training. Annually, the base provides training for an estimated 1, 200 aviation personnel’s for the United States Military. The facility primarily accommodates one squadron for helicopter training and a total of three secured wing squadrons.

    Hurlburt Field is named after a United States Army Lieutenant Donald Wilson Hurlburt who was killed in a plane crash. It is a United States military Base which had been previously named Eglin-Hurlburt Airdrome, Hurlburt Field and Eglin Auxiliary Field number 9 until 1948 when it assumed its current name. The facility spaces a space of about 27 square kilometers and has a total population of almost 8000 military personnel. Hurlburt field can boast of the best military equipment and personnel in the Florida State. The early 1960s saw the facility being used as a dispersal base for 306th Bomb Wing’s B-47s Strategic Air Command.

    Over the years, their aircraft range had included AC-18K Stinger gunships, AC-47 Spooky gunships, B-26K Counter invaders and many more. There is a long paved runway, which has hungers located west of it. Lockheed AC-130 Spectre or Spooky gunships and MC-130 Combat Talon were introduced to operate in the base when special operations were introduced. The USAF Special Operations School, located on the Hurlburt Field trains Air Force, Army, Navy, Coast Guards and Marine Corps.

    They also train civilian society on Dynamics of International Terrorism, Middle East Orientation Course and many more. The Hurlburt Field also houses the Joint Special Operations University, which has lectures drawn from all branches of the United States military, the Department of State, Central Intelligence Agency, non-governmental organizations and civilian universities.

    The university allows frank comments from students, faculty and staff. An Air Commando Air Park is available at the field, but is only accessible to military personnel, due to the security measures put in place in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks on the United States. Every visitor entering the facility must be sponsored. The facility was used to stage the Transformers 3 movie and also by the Miami NBA heat for training before the beginning of the main season.

    It is a major Navy air base in the city of Jacksonville in Florida. It has a major air field with one long runway and it now hosts third largest fleet in United States. The base was built in 1942 and has been upgraded several times. It also has a harbor adjacent to the base capable of accommodating 34-ships and has a long runway capable to handle large size planes. It is also home to US 4th Fleet that is one of the most important fleets of US Navy, but it is not in operation since 1950. The base also has the honor to serve some of the best ships that served US Navy such as USS Shanri-La, USS Franklin D. Roosevelt, USS John F. Kennedy and more.

    Currently there are no carriers deployed at Florida Mayport Naval Station because all conventional diesel carriers were discontinued; the US Congress has passed $75 million budget to further upgrade the base and provide nuclear carriers. In early 2010 it was announced that Mayport base will be home to a nuclear aircraft carrier, it is also suggested that this action will help protect the surrounding area due to higher level of security. There are other navy bases near Florida Mayport working as homeport of nuclear carriers but there is only one carrier that is commissioned to Mayport base. There are also suggestions to the decision and it has not been settled yet. The base do works as base to cruisers, frigates and destroyers but there is only one carrier.

    The base also offers other good facilities such as school, recreational parks and entertainment facilities for navy personnel, officers and families; naval families are only allowed to enter the area on special occasions. The base is commissioned with 6-squadrons working on different operations and participates in training exercises.

  • MacDill Air Force Base

    Florida MacDill Air Force Base is one of the most important bases in US located 4-miles from city Tampa, Florida. It is home to some of the most important everyday missions in Florida. It is also home to some of the most important airplanes such as Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker used for refueling airplanes in Florida air space and C-37A Gulfstream that is a private business jet used by high profile personnel. It also supports around 3000 personnel for everyday operations as well as outside operations with 12000 personnel. Florida MacDill’s primary mission is to provide support to on-flight refueling facility operating around the world. It is also base to Orion P-3, Gulfstream IV and provides support to Hurricanes Hunter airplanes.

    The base supports 6-AMW comprising of 3000 personnel having capability to refuel jet planes during flight around the world. It can provide rapid support and they are stationed around the world. The whole team is commanded from Florida Machdill air base and they use Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker jet plane for refueling.

    The base was built in 1939 and was named as Southeast Air Base Tampa but was later renamed to Leslie MacDill who was a fighter pilot in World War I. During Spanish-American War the base was upgraded to support the war and it was stationed with many wings such as Third Air Force with the mission to patrol against Spanish submarines during the war. It also became headquarter of the bombardment group during the war, and some of them are still stationed in Florida Machill.

    During World War II the air-submarine mission was transferred to navy and aircrew at the base were trained to be deployed around the world. Today many of bombardment groups and wings are still stationed at Florida MacDill base and offer some of the best jet planes such as F-16s and MacDill family planes.

  • Naval Air Station Key West

    It is basically a military base and naval station located in west of Florida. Its purpose is to provide security to defense organizations in US, which includes national security, allied forces and agencies. It is also home to many training operations such as US Air Force Special under Water Operations School and task force exercises. The base comprises of many smaller operational facilities including health clinic and properties in Florida. Surprisingly it also has recreational facilities for families such as RV Park and Sigsbee Park built in 1940s. The property of the park is privately owned but it is managed by Florida Key West base.

    The base also has bachelor and officer quarters comprising of navy and government personnel. It also has a separate quarter for senior commissioned officers with better facilities. The quarter can also be seen from Sigsbee Park as it was once parts of the base and it was used for landing of sea planes. The base also has a beach that was once in operation.

    The base was built in 1823 and it was first used to fight piracy when merchants use sea to transport materials to US. Infact it was home to some of the most widely known pirates of the world. But it stopped during US-Spain and Mexico-US war when the base was expended. The war between US and Spain started after sinking of USS Maine in 1898 and US Atlantic Fleet moved to Florida Key West base. Today it is one of the most ideal places for training having ideal flying conditions round the year. The base is attached adjacent to open sea offering wide area of water for airplanes. It also provides rapid access to open sea and planes.

    Today the air base is under command of Captain S. W. Holmes. Florida Key West is not the best air base in Florida but it has its own advantages over others.

It has large beach area and there are many people on the beach.  The Coast Guard is very active with headquarter located in Miami named as District 7. It also operates in other parts of the country providing safety operations, these areas include Georgia and South Carolina. It also operates in Caribbean and Puerto Rico.

    The coast guard is only allowed to operate in certain areas and has to take permission to enter other areas, which may belong to defense organizations. The Coast Guard is equipped with sophisticated electronics for both defense and safety. They also have jet planes and helicopters such a Dassault Falcon 20 that is a business jet but it is also used to do surveys and travel long distances. Coast Guard also has Eurocopter HH-65 Dolphin helicopter used in search and rescue operations around US, which also comes in other models and some of them are used by Coast Guard. They also use diesel powered air planes such as EADS Casa HC-144 Ocean Sentry that are also used in marine patrol operations; it is usually used to deliver cargo having capacity to lift 16,000-kg, transfer passengers and travel long distances.

    Besides providing rescue assistance Coast Guard also focuses on providing security from illegal immigrants who tries to enter United States through sea routes. They also provide protection from drug trades by working along defense organizations. A good feature of Coast Guard District 7 headquarter is that they are located on Opa-locka Airport, which is a general purpose and civil-military joint operation airport. This gives Cost Guard the facility to response rapidly on command.  The airport was built during World War II as Naval Air Station Miami but today it operates as a general airport.

    It is also sometime called Naval Air Station Jacksonville at tomes places and it is located the city of Jacksonville, Florida. The base was built in the year 1940 and it is located near another air base in Florida. The base has very importance as it had the second largest rifle range in US and Florida National Guards started training here during early 1900s. it has also worked along other air stations such as Naval Station Mayport, which gives Florida Jacksonville station great importance in northeast Florida.

    During the World War, the air base saw many constructions and many new buildings were made, which included prisoner compound, hospitals, chapel and other buildings all in total of 700 and some of them are still in use. Due to continuous stationing of troops in Florida Jacksonville, the air station was further expanded with more buildings and it continued expanding till 1940. In 1950s a budget of $325,000 was passed to further expand the air station with larger parking ramps, air-craft hangers and a longer aircraft taxing area.

    The air base is now working with 23,000 personals and civilians, and the base is considered as one of the busiest naval bases in Florida comprising of smaller areas inside the premises of the base. Today it also works as Aviation Maintenance Facility supported by other smaller aviation organizations. It also comprise of pilot training facility, naval hospital, highly equipped maintenance crew capable to performing maintenance operation from highly sophisticated electronics to complete engine repairs and replacements, industrial center, naval family service center, recreational areas for both navy personnel and their families and naval communities.

    Today the base has become the largest station for naval aviation and it is home to training center for NATO pilots, US pilots, air crew as well as maintenance personnel, as well as only home to Navy plane P-3 Orion.
